NSW: Kelly defends gun laws amendments

14 Dec 2008 1:20 PM

The NSW government says amendments proposed by the Shooters Party to remove a waiting period for people wanting to buy a second gun .. are sensible.

Police Minister TONY KELLY says the whole purpose of a 28-day waiting period when you get your first gun is so police can check you out .. and you already have a gun licence.

The National Coalition of Gun Control says the rise in gun ownership in NSW .. to nearly 690 thousand .. coincides with a deal cut by Labor and the Shooters Party to water down tough gun laws introduced after the Port Arthur massacre.

It says the more guns around .. the more likely they'll fall into the wrong hands.
